Boilers and Pressure Vessels

Stainless Steel

Stainless steels are steel alloys with about 10.5 % chromium. This chromium provides a barrier that is formed after reacting with oxygen to prevent corrosion. Normally, stainless steel has undergone the corrosion process although it is not visible to the naked eye. This process makes it stronger or more resistant to subsequent corrosion. Grades of Stainless Steel

There are different grades of austenitic stainless steel but the two most used ones are the grade 304 and 316 stainless steel which we will be describing to you below.

Grade 304 Stainless

This is the most used type of stainless steel and it consists of a high amount of nickel and that weighs about 11 % and a relatively high amount of chromium of about 19 to 21%. Because of its high amount of chromium, grade 304 stainless steels are very resistant against corrosion and they can be used in home appliances like fridges, also used in plumbing and food production equipment

Grade 316 Stainless Steel

Just like the grade 304 stainless steel, grade 316 stainless steel consists of large compositions of chromium and nickel. The 316 also contains iron, manganese, and carbon. Furthermore, it consists more of molybdenum compared to 304. They are mostly used in the marine environment, processing of chemicals, refineries, medical facilities and for storage

Other Grades Of Stainless Steel

  • Grade 301: this is a very ductile type of stainless steel and it is very weldable
  • Grade 302: It is stronger than grade 304 but they have the same anti-corrosive capability
  • Grade 309: It is more resistant to temperature compared to grade 304 stainless steel.
  • Grade 303: Sulphur and phosphorous are added to it which makes it easier to machine.
